Ricky Gervais bags his first lead film role in David Koepp’s romantic comedy, and thankfully he proves more successful than the Brit comics Lenny Henry (TrueIdentity) and Rik Mayall (DropDeadFred).
Thestout funny man plays Bertram Pincus, a misanthropic dentist who shuns thehumanrace. When Pincus dies unexpectedly during an operation, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes, he wakes up to find that he now has the rather irritating ability to see ghosts. And the spirits are very keen to chat, particularly boorish Frank (Greg Kinnear), who pesters him into breaking up the impending marriage of his widow (Téa Leoni). But Pincus falls for her. Of course he does. Is it sentimental? Yes, but it’s also, surprisingly, rather lovely, too.
