After performing a secret gig at last year's Reading and Leeds festivals rockers Green Day have been confirmed as the final headliners for this year's event.

They join previously announced acts Eminem and Biffy Clyro at the festivals which take place on 23 to 25 August.

Green Day's surprise appearance last year was to promote their trio of new albums ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, ¡Tre!

But the band responsible for nineties smash-hit album Dookie had to cancel dates on a promotional tour after lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong was admitted to rehab suffering from substance abuse.

He sought treatment last September following an expletive-filled onstage rant during a Las Vegas music festival.

Green Day have only recently begun playing gigs after a five month break.

Also on the line-up for Reading and Leeds are Haim, A$AP Rocky, Azealia Banks, "Harlem Shake" star Baauer, recent chart-toppers Bastille and dance act Chase & Status.

Other confirmed acts include Editors, Frank Turner, Nine Inch Nails, Tame Impala, Alex Clare, The Blackout, The Strypes and Magnetic Man among others.

This year organisers have revealed there will be two extra stages, the BBC Radio 1 dance stage and the BBC Radio 1Xtra stage.
