Messier's 612th goal is overtime winner

Mark Messier scored 43 seconds into overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in the North American NHL in Tampa, Florida. Messier redirected a pass from Markus Naslund past goalie Dan Cloutier for the Vancouver center's 612th goal, one shy of tying Mario Lemieux for sixth place on the career list.

The Lightning overcame a three-goal deficit Tuesday night to force overtime on Stephane Richer's goal with 1:13 left in regulation. Russian Alexander Mogilny, Donald Brashear, Todd Bertuzzi, Peter Schaefer and Greg Hawgood added goals for Vancouver. Russian Sergey Gusev, Chris Gratton, Bill Houlder and Darcy Tucker also scored for Tampa Bay.

MIGHTY DUCKS 7, CAPITALS 1

At Washington, Matt Cullen, wearing a shield to protect a broken cheekbone, had a goal and three assists as Anaheim routed Washington. Cullen, who took a high stick in the face in the Ducks' 3-2 loss at Florida on Saturday, assisted on two goals by Finland's Teemu Selanne and one by Czech Pavel Trnka. Mike Leclerc added two goals, and Finland's Antti Aalto also scored. Guy Hebert made 28 saves for the Ducks, allowing only Jeff Halpern's third-period goal.

SHARKS 2, RANGERS 1

At New York, Jeff Friesen and Patrick Marleau scored 30 seconds apart early in the second period as SaSteve Shields stopped 26 shots as the Sharks beat the Rangers for the first time in 16 tries. San Jose has won four straight overall and seven of nine. Russian Valeri Kamensky scored for New York.

BLUES 7, FLAMES 1

At St Louis, Pierre Turgeon had two goals and two assists to help St Louis rout Calgary and former Blues goalie Grant Fuhr. Chris Pronger added three assists for the Blues, who put it away with three goals in a span of 4:26 to make it 5-1 in the second period. Fuhr, 37, looking to become the sixth goalie to win 400 games, allowed six goals on 26 shots.

Craig Conroy, Scott Young and Chechs Pavol Demitra, Michal Handzus and Lubos Bartecko also scored for St Louis. Roman Turek made 22 saves for the Blues, allowing only Russian Valeri Bure's goal.
