England's Gareth Herbert and Andrew Baggaley claimed the men's doubles gold medal on Saturday with a tense five-game win over Ryan Jenkins and Adam Robertson of Wales.

The English pair fought their way back from 5-1 and 9-6 down in the deciding game and then surviving a clutch of match points to win 11-9, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9, 17-15.

The Welsh pair had looked in firm control after taking the third game to lead 2-1, but Herbert and Baggaley refused to concede defeat and hit back to win. "We expected a tough game," Baggaley said. "I can't believe we did it. We were down in the fifth but we played well at the right times. We weren't going to let that gold medal slip."

Nigeria's Segun Moses Toriola upset Canada's Johnny Huang yesterday to win the men's final and his first Games gold. Toriola, 28, triumphed in a tight, see-sawing game against the former US Open champion Huang, winning 3-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-9.

Huang, best remembered for storming out of his doubles game over a disputed referee's call, also lost to the Nigerian in the team event. "It is probably the best moment of my career," Toriola said.

New Zealand's Chunli Li won the women's title against Singapore's Jia Wei Li 11-6, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8. Chunli, born in China, had to fight hard to overcome her opponent, at 20-years-old half her age.

Jia Wei Li did win two golds. With Yong Jun Duan she won the mixed doubles, beating Australia's Brett Clarke and Jian Fang Lay 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4 and she joined Jun Hong Jing in the women's doubles to defeat Chunli Li and sister Karen Li 11-3, 11-7, 10-12, 11-4.

England's Sue Gilroy beat South Africa's Alette Moll 11-5, 13-11, 11-3, in the women's disabled final.
