White: 1998 Tokay Pinot Gris, Cave de Ribeauvillé, £5.99, Majestic

White: 1998 Tokay Pinot Gris, Cave de Ribeauvillé, £5.99, Majestic

From the superior Alsace co-operative in Ribeauvillé, in the foothills of the Vosges Mountains, this is a beguiling, delicately spicy and rich white wine with dried-fruit flavours and slight smoky roundedness, which are nicely offset by its palate-cleansing acidity. A fine dry white to enjoy with either pâté or flans.

Red: 1996 Blue Pyrenees Victoria, £9.99, Tesco

A powerful blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and shiraz from Victoria's cool-climate Pyrenees region. With a sprig of mint in the bouquet and a strong-flavoured, rich mouthful of cassis and blackberry fruit, it would ideally suit a game bird or a red wine-based risotto.
