Eleven Tube stations were yesterday given Grade II listed status by Heritage Minister Ian Sproat because of their historical and architectural importance. This brings the total number of listed stations on the network to 46.
The 11 stations - Farringdon, Holloway Road, Hounslow West, Ealing Common, Acton Town, Northfields, Sudbury Hill, Turnpike Lane, Rayners Lane, Eastcote and Loughton - are intended to demonstrate the best of the architecture employed during the Underground's three main phases of expansion; the 1860s, the turn of the century and the 1930s.
Mr Sproat said that between the two world wars London's Underground 'was regarded as the most advanced rapid transit system in the world'.
