In Britain, at least, dogs are no longer "man's best friend". A recent survey revealed that domestic cats outnumbered their canine counterparts as companion animal of choice. There are an estimated 7.18 million cats

in British households, and 6.65 million dogs - with the Labrador easily the most popular breed. Ornamental fish, however, are the most numerous of all pets: there were 24.38 million of them at the last count.
