A saga about a man finding shrimp tails in his box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal has invested people further after it was revealed that he is married to the actress who played Topanga on Boy Meets World.

On Monday, Jensen Karp became the subject of internet attention after he revealed on Twitter that he had consumed a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch only to find a shrimp tail and other questionable substances in the box.

After finding the shrimp tails and unidentifiable objects, thewriter and TV producer reached out to the brand’s Twitter account, as well as Cinnamon Toast Crunch’s parent company, General Mills

While the companies were initially helpful, it was when the cereal brand issued a statement denying that the objects in question were shrimp tails, but instead “an accumulation of the cinnamon sugar,” that the incident began to gain traction.

“After further investigation with our team that closely examined the image, it appears to be an accumulation of the cinnamon sugar that sometimes can occur when ingredients aren’t thoroughly blended,” the statement from Cinnamon Toast Crunch read. “We assure you that there’s no possibility of cross contamination with shrimp.”

As Karp began feuding with the company, which he accused of “gaslighting,” people on social media who had been following the story began focusing their attention on his private life, only to discover that he is married to Danielle Fishel Karp, who played Topanga on the 1990s sitcom.

The discovery has sparked renewed interest in Karp’s dilemma, with many revealing both their amusement and shock at the connection.

“Finding out the Cinnamon Toast shrimp guy is married to Topanga from Boy Meets World is breaking me,” one person tweeted.

Another said: “Uhhh TOPANGA is Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shrimp guy’s wife??? Every new piece of information I glean about this story just blows my mind.”

“I think the wildest part of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch shrimp saga is that the dude who found the shrimp tails is married to the actress who played Topanga on Boy Meets World. That’s the part that I’m hung up on honestly,” someone else wrote.

Others used the opportunity to joke about the couple’s names, with one person tweeting: “I can’t decide if I was more taken aback by the fact that you’re married to TOPANGA, or that both of your last names (Karp & Fishel) are also oddly seafood related…”

As for the actress’s reaction to the cereal situation, she initially tweeted her shock over the company’s statement on Monday, when she wrote: “‘Accumulation of sugar particles.’ I am truly at a loss for words.”

Speaking to the New York Post, Karp also said his famous wife is “mad” and “really disappointed in the brand.

“She’s honestly mad,” he said. “She is really disappointed in General Mills’ statement and hoped to see more concern, rather than just tell me it was actually sugar, not shrimp tails (which is insane).

“People are allergic (I am luckily not) and their main focus should be finding out how it happened to help anyone who could also run into this.”

In addition to the shrimp tails, Karp also revealed on Twitter that he reportedly found what appeared to be string in the cereal, as well as cereal squares containing black marks, which some have hypothesised may be rat faeces.

The bags of cereal, which were reportedly purchased by the couple at a Costco in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, were also taped up, according to photos shared by Karp.

As of Wednesday, Karp said he was waiting for an envelope from General Mills to be delivered so that he could send the company pieces of the cereal and some of the shrimp tail for identification.

In a statement, the cereal company said: “While we are still investigating this matter, we can say with confidence that this did not occur at our facility.

“We are waiting for the consumer to send us the package to investigate further. Any consumers who notice their cereal box or bag has been tampered with, such as the clear tape that was found in this case, should contact us.”

The Independent has contacted General Mills for comment.
