There are an estimated 75 tribes and 15 main ethnic groups in the Congo area of west and central Africa. In the past they have suffered more than most at the hands of colonisers. In the 1890s, Belgium's King Leopold II was responsible for as many as 10 million deaths in the region through his policy of brutal enslavement, a catastrophe still referred to today by tribes as "the overwhelming".
