The last Wednesday in August is "Tomatina" day in this small town 30 miles west of Valencia. For one hour, from noon until one, locals and visitors hurl 40 tons of ripe tomatoes at each other. After years of trying to ban the event, the authorities finally gave their blessing this year and even provided communal showers.
