Chiefs player Derrick Nnadi celebrates Super Bowl win by paying adoption fees for 100 dogs
'What an incredibly generous gesture', says animal shelter
Derrick Nnadi has celebrated the Kansas City Chiefs first Super Bowl win in 50 years in an unconventional way.
On Sunday, the defensive tackle announced that he vowed to pay for the $150 (£115) adoption fees of 100 dogs at the Kansas City Pet Project shelter if his team took home the Super Bowl trophy.
Following their victory, Nnadi stuck to his word and made sure that every dog at the animal shelter was free to adopt.
Speaking to CNN, the player said the promise gave him extra motivation to go out and play his very best.
“I’ve never been a champion before. All the years of me playing football, that first time honestly feels like the best day of my life,” Nnadi said.
He also went on to explain that his first dog, Rocky, was the reason he decided to give back.
“All my life I always wanted a dog,” Nnadi explained.
“Growing up I didn’t have a pet, my parents didn’t really allow pets and when I first got [Rocky], he was very timid.
“It made me think of how other animals, whether they’re owned or in a shelter, are feeling scared and alone.”
The KC Pet Project thanked the Chief’s player on Twitter, writing: “We’re so honoured to partner with @DerrickNnadi who is sponsoring the adoption fees of all of our adoptables dogs at our locations!
“What an incredibly generous gesture and we want to thank Derrick for his support all season long.”
On Monday, the shelter announced that thanks to Nnadi’s generosity 38 dogs had already been adopted.
“44 pets left the shelter today (38 dogs and 6 cats) with new families and up to 30 more are going home tomorrow!” the shelter wrote.
“Of the 109 dogs that qualified for the sponsorship, around 40-50 of those dogs will still be available after tomorrow, which is incredible. Thank you @DerrickNnadi!”
Nnadi’s kindness wasn’t the only touching moment to come out of the Super Bowl.
On Sunday, Google tugged hard at heart strings with its latest advert, which depicted the tale of an elderly man recalling fond memories of his late wife.
The short film left a number of Super Bowl viewers “in tears”, many of whom expressed their admiration for it on social media.
“Love and loss beautifully portrayed in this #SuperBowl advert by @Google,” one person tweeted.
“I legit just sobbed at the Google commercial. Damn advert agency manipulative goons!” another commented.
