Jacqueline Rabun started designing jewellery in 1989 and is entirely self-taught. At a time when gold was good and flash was in, Rabun's designs were underplayed, humble and in silver. It didn't take long for them to catch on. U2, Lenny Kravitz, Mick Jagger, Tori Amos and womenswear designer Ben de Lisi all wear Rabun's jewellery. In September 1992, British Vogue featured Linda Evangelista wearing a Rabun battered silver ID bracelet on the front cover and the ID bracelet became cool once more. Her big chunky silver rings are now a fresh alternative to the more conventional wedding ring. Rabun's collection evolves slowly. In the last few seasons she has started mixing silver with semi-precious stones such as the peridot featured here, iolite and garnet, blue topaz and rock crystal. They bring a new dimension to jewellery for those of us who like it to be pretty, but not too girlie. A peridot of this size is extremely rare, hence the price. AB
