A time of tradition, Christmas is a great excuse to quite literally wear your joy on your sleeve, and whip out your favourite festive jumper, but that doesn’t mean style standards should slip completely.

This year, Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day falls on 16 December and everyone everywhere will be getting in on the act. Yes, we’re well aware that a merry knit falls far from sartorial sovereignty but nonetheless we just can’t resist – it’s for a good cause, after all.

A Christmas jumper should be a fun thing to buy but let’s get one thing straight: if it’s stylish execution you’re after, flashing lights and granny’s homespun score are a serious no-no.

Instead, opt for a classic fair-isle, intarsia or even a jacquard print. Cheery coloured stripes, embroidery and sequin-strewn pullovers count too.

If even that’s too much, you can capture the festive spirit with a sweater that announces “Prosecco Ho Ho” or the timeless “Let It Snow”. Or go mega-subtle with a Bella Freud.

What’s more, a pared-back jersey means you can pull off the look with your usual style – wear it over a dress or pair with a pleated skirt.

How festive you decide to look is up to you but if you do decide to opt for full-on festivity, pare down with some understated jeans.

While novelty knits are undoubtedly fun, more simple designs will have you staying on the classy side – but don’t be a complete Scrooge. They’re as much a part of the Great British Christmas as sprouts and the obligatory family barney.
