Catwalk beauty: Designer trends still inspire the colours that make it into our make-up bags

It will come as no surprise that backstage footage of Nineties fashion shows features supermodels in hair and make-up. What is surprising, however, is that these (ludicrously well-paid) Glamazons are painting their own faces.
These days, catwalk make-up is used to underline the designer's message, and can be one of the most experimental parts of a show. In the same way that fashion trends are tamed by the time they reach us mere mortals, so do those concerning beauty – but they still inspire the colours and textures that make it into our make-up bags.
Lips in Mink
£8, Topshop Beauty, topshop.com
As seen at Topshop Unique. A flattering pinky shade with a hint of mocha – this is a modern way to wear the neutral lipshades of the Sixties, a key trend this season.
Nail Polish in Ink Blue No 245
£15, burberry.com
As seen at Burberry. The colour of a stormy sea, this is a welcome alternative to the berries and noirs that can typify the sophisticated nail palette of autumn.
Eye & Brow Maestro in Almond
£26.50, Giorgio Armani Cosmetics, selfridges.com
As seen at Giorgio Armani. Bleaching and darkening models' brows is a favourite trick of make-up artists, and can now be attempted at home without the commitment.
Pigment in Copper Sparkle
£17, maccosmetics.co.uk
As seen at Holly Fulton. Molten metallics return once again this season. Dip a fine wet brush in this super sparkly powder and use as eyeliner or wash all over lids to light up eyes.
Sea salt spray
£11.45, Fudge, fudge.com
As seen at Chanel. Plaits and braids took hold of the catwalks this season – whether you go for dreads, corn rows or something looser, this texturising spray will add staying power to your look.
