Summer's juiciest trend: Vivid shades of lemon, lime and tangerine

Not one for shrinking violets - this season has outfits to make you feel freshly squeezed

You don't have to be a style expert to know that colour trends are largely dictated by the seasons and there's no better time to experiment with vibrant shades than the summer, when higher temperatures and a beaming sun make everything feel a little brighter.

The catwalks were awash with colour for spring/summer 2014; Fendi showed organza dresses in a spectrum of shades from tangerine to grapefruit, while Roksanda Ilincic mixed and matched lime green with lemon in geometric shapes.

Yellow can be a difficult look to get right, luckily there are a range of shades available to wear; from neon bright to

buttery soft tints. For fairer skin types it's best to steer clear of any of the livelier colours which will have a washing out effect, instead opt for pastel lemon. Darker tones can afford to go for broke in eye-popping hues that will flatter the complexion.

Orange is an easier shade to master and complements most skin tones, unless of course you have had a helping hand in the tan department in which case all-over creosote colouring is a look best avoided.

For those intimidated by colour, these tangy shades will seem a daunting prospect. The key is to start off small; accessories in bright shades paired with an otherwise neutral outfit will have a colour-pop effect.

The next step from there is to experiment with separates; a bright shade won't seem so scary when teamed with white which will have a neutralising effect. Block colour works best head-to-toe, as long as you stick to simple shapes; anything with a lot of detail or design features will become overwhelming in such a sunny shade.
