As my age advances I've noticed that hangovers grow ever longer, even as the actual partying tends to end earlier and earlier. We're talking pre-dawn, I'm not at the point where I can sleep through “Auld Lang Syne” and all that jazz just yet. Inevitably I start the new year with a remnant from the old one, namely a sore head and dry mouth.

If like me you're fatigued by all the festivities, you'll no doubt be in need of a little self-help, and no I don't think now is the time to start questioning your major life choices.

A clean start is the best way to feel a little brighter, I've found – sloughing, scrubbing and steaming is a good distraction and an extremely easy way to feel like you've achieved something even if you haven't actually left the house. Think of it as one last indulgence before returning to work: when Monday comes and for the first time in days your alarm wrenches you from slumber, you'll no doubt be glad you did

Deep cleansing fix

£7.95, nipandfab.com

This cream can be used nightly to remove make-up and dirt but leave it on for 10 minutes and it's a pore-cleansing mask treatment.

Blackhead exfoliator

£4.99, Good Things, boots.com

A fruity scrub designed for young skin, but actually most will benefit from its non-drying decongesting properties.

Clarifying clay mask

£38, Malin + Goetz, spacenk.com

A thick formula packed with kaolin clay and exfoliating pumice, this 10-minute refining treatment is great for balancing oily skin.

Gentle peeling smooth away cream

£25, clarins.co.uk

Apply a thin layer of this deep-cleaning mask, then a minute later rub and peel it off – a gross but strangely satisfying process.

Aromatic purifying balm

£45, Darphin, 0870 034 2566

Use this clarifying treatment over your whole face or apply on the spot when you feel a breakout building.
