H&M launches bra collection designed for breast cancer survivors

One hundred per cent of sales will go directly to the American Cancer Society

H&M has designed a line of bras specifically to suit the needs of breast cancer survivors.

The capsule collection was inspired by an H&M employee in the US who overcame the illness and was subsequently unable to find “affordable, fashionable and functional” bras to wear.

100 per cent of the profits will be donated to the American Cancer Society, who the high street giant hopes to raise $125,000 (£160,000) for to fund breast cancer research.

There are three styles of bras in the collection, which is named “Close to My Heart, all of which come in muted neutral tones that prioritise comfort without compromising on design.

Shoppers can choose from a fast-drying sports bra, which has a racer back design, or a soft-cup bra which comes in either lace or microfibre - each of which has been created with the requirements of breast cancer survivors in mind and will suit women who have had single or double mastectomies and chosen to wear a breast prosthesis.

"The design process focused on fit and comfort," a spokesperson for the brand tells The Independent.

"The bras were developed in close collaboration with women who have had breast cancer and removed one of their breasts.

"The difference between an ordinary bra and one for prostheses is that it covers more of the breast and that it has pockets for the prostheses.

The pockets are made in a mesh quality for extra support of the prostheses."

The collection, which is available online and in stores now, is bound to help thousands of breast cancer survivors everywhere who struggle to find suitable undergarments to wear while they recover.

When it comes to finding a bra to wear in the first year after breast surgery, the charity Breast Cancer Care UK advises seeking styles with soft seams, full cups, minimal detailing and cup separation - all of which feature in H&M’s designs.

The organisation also suggests avoiding bras with underwire while you’re still recovering so as to avoid a tightening feeling.

If possible, women recovering from surgery should also opt for bras with a high cotton content as these will be gentler on the skin and help regulate temperature if they’re experiencing hot flushes.

H&M states that the proceeds from the collection will help fund cutting-edge research into breast cancer in addition to supporting those with breast cancer by providing access to medical screenings and follow-up care.
