How to wear headbands the grown up way

If the last time you wore a headband was when butterfly clips and Velcro shoes were all the rage then it’s time to rethink how you dress up your hair, because this look is no longer the preserve of schoolgirls.

Once loved by snobby high-school clique Heathers, royals and even Hillary Clinton circa 1992, the divisive style relic has had a grown-up makeover for Autumn/Winter 2017 proving that you’re never too old to don a headband.

A look that prevailed on the runways this season, was Chanel's metallic wrap-around band – keeping models’ ears warm and emphasising the Sixties style bouffant created by hair stylist Sam McKnight.

Elsewhere, Elie Saab’s typically romantic, after-dark evening wear saw layers of tulle, marabou and ruffle-trimmed skirts offset with graceful gilded headbands that scraped model’s hair off their face to reveal a sultry smokey eye.

This haphazard approach to hair styling could be seen at Temperley London too where Antonio Corral Calero created a rock’n’roll look with natural texture and movement. Embracing rogue flyaways, the stylist aimed to keep the look imperfect before securing with a thick velvet headband on several of the models.

While we’re well aware that headbands still have the potential to look juvenile and prissy, picking the right one has the ability to change your entire ensemble.

The key here is to stay as far away from perfectly groomed tresses as you possible can. Instead, take your cue from the runway and pair yours with hair that’s a little messy or slung into a low dishevelled ponytail.
