The weather is warming up, finally, and we’re getting ready to break out our summertime wears but that doesn’t necessarily mean your go-to pieces from cooler climes need to be relegated to the back of the wardrobe.

When you think of quintessentially summer textiles, satin might not instantly spring to mind but thanks to a rise in Nineties style and the now-ubiquitous slip dress, it’s quickly becoming the fabric of the season.

Shiny, glossy and super-soft on skin, you may have noticed it flooding your social media feeds with everyone from designers, models and street style styles elevating off-duty looks with shimmering satin styles.

A flattering addition to any well-dressed woman’s wardrobe, here we take a look at our favourite ways to wear this season’s must-have fabric.

Asymmetrical satin dress, £60, Mango

A satin cami-dress is one of those pieces that will never really go out of style and promises to be one of the hardest working pieces in your new season collection.

An item that emanates a certain insouciance while still looking polished, this one from Mango is cut with a straight design, thin double crossover straps on the back and an interesting asymmetric hem.

Wear yours in the evening with strappy heels or a pair of boots to add a touch of androgynous edge. Available in pastel purple, yellow and lipstick red.

Satin spot print ruffle midi skirt, £42, Topshop

Midi skirts are a versatile piece for spring and summer and while they can be seriously provocative, you can also dress them down to be picnic, work or wedding appropriate.

Our favourite is this spotty one from Topshop which ticks two trends at once. Made from ivory satin, it sits just on the waist and is finished with a soft ruffle detail and tie side.

We think this looks best worn with a black T-shirt tucked-in and a pair of block heel mules.

V-neck satin strappy Top, £13, H&M

If you’re the kind of girl that can’t bear to part with her jeans even in the summer then a silky camisole will prove invaluable when it comes to sprucing up.

The perfect way to go from daytime drinks to a night on the town, a satin top will elevate your denim from lazy weekend wear to evening shindigs in a second.

That being said, you can still dress it down for daytime or cooler days by layering a simple white T-shirt underneath. We love this bargain option from H&M which comes in black, cream, navy and red.

Stella McCartney, high-rise striped jacquard silk satin trousers, £585, Matches Fashion

It might not be the most obvious way to wear the trend but if you’re on the hunt for a statement piece a pair of satin trousers is a great way to embrace the trend.

Crafted from whisper-weight silk-satin with cream jacquard stripes, we like Stella McCartney’s high-rise trousers that are cut with fluid legs and nipped at the waist with an elasticated waistband.

Wear yours on balmy summer evenings with a tucked in strappy top and brightly coloured accessories.

Platform Sandals, £40, Zara

You might not have worn a pair of satin shoes since ballet class but if the sound of sporting the luxe fabric elsewhere puts you off, footwear might be more appealing.

Proving that satin should be on your feet right now, this pair of platform sandals from Zara not only look great but are super-comfy to wear.

Finished in bronze satin, they’re designed with stylish straps on the front an ankle strap closure and a chunky block heel.
