Melania Trump’s outfit choice for the final night of the Republican National Convention has resulted in a new meme format, due to the unique colour of the dress.

On Thursday, the first lady arrived at the convention, which took place on the South Lawn of the White House, in a $3,000 neon green Valentino gown with pleat details and a cape.

Shortly after her arrival, social media users began pointing out the resemblance between Ms Trump’s dress and a green screen, a visual effects tool that can be used to superimpose videos and images.

The realisation prompted many people to transform the first lady’s dress with everything from coronavirus charts to Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s face.

In one video, which sees the first lady and President Trump walking down steps towards the podium, the dress can be seen showing the number of US coronavirus cases and deaths.

In another video, shared by comedian Trevor Noah, the dress has been edited to reflect a video of the president speaking with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

“Melania’s fashion choices always send a message,” The Daily Show host wrote.

Other edits saw the dress transformed into a backdrop for a photo of the president with Stormy Daniels, while some took the opportunity to show the weather forecast.

The dress was also edited to reflect another of Ms Trump’s questionable fashion choices, a jacket that she wore to visit children at a border detention centre that read: “I really don’t care do u?”

"Melania Trump couldn't decide which dress to wear so she wore a green screen to let Twitter choose for her," one person tweeted.

Another said: "This is what happens when you wear chroma green on national television" and linked to a photo of the first lady showcasing the weather.

While the dress was met with amusement, some people did wonder why the first lady opted for the colour at all, considering an outfit worn by Queen Elizabeth II previously went viral for the same reason.

"If Melania knew how many people are going to take advantage of that green screen-coloured dress, she would have worn something else," one person wrote, attaching a photo of the Queen in a green outfit of the same colour, and an edit showing the monarch dressed in a suit made of pizza.

Despite the resulting memes, there were also people who praised Ms Trump's vibrant dress.

"Melania's dress is actually really nice and the colour is so sharp," one person tweeted. "Love it."
