Met Gala 2019's most eyecatching outfits

Among names such as Lady Gaga, Billy Porter and Zendaya on everyone’s lips following last night's Met Gala, was Harry Styles who stunned onlookers at the star-studded event with his "Camp"-inspired ensemble.

On Monday evening, the singer – who was a co-host at the event – took to the gala’s pink carpet alongside Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele dressed in a bespoke outfit designed by the Italian luxury brand that hasn't failed to disappoint sartorial and music fans, alike.

Adhering to the night’s theme, “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, the former One Direction star blended New Romantism and Victoriana fashion, by wearing a sheer frilled black blouse, trousers, and black heeled boots.

However, while Styles’s outfit entranced onlookers, it was his sole pearl earring that really had people talking.

And, according to the singer’s stylist, Harry Lambert, the accessory was a last-minute addition to months of creative work between Michele, Styles and the singer’s stylist, Harry Lambert.

In fact, Styles pierced his ear specifically for the gala, with Lambert describing the earring as the "perfect final touch for the outfit”.

“About four days ago, the day before I left to travel to New York, I was on Gucci’s website and saw these pearl earrings,” Lambert explained in an interview with Vogue.

“Harry and I have discussed previously piercing his ears, and this was the perfect time. I text him and he replied, saying ‘Let’s do it.’”

The earring appeared to be designed in the shape of a bee with diamond wings.

Opening up about the aesthetic behind Style’s look, Lambert added: “This look is about taking traditionally feminine elements like the frills, heeled boots, sheer fabric and the pearl earring, but then rephrasing them as masculine pieces set against the high-waisted tailored trousers and his tattoos.

“The look, I feel, is elegant. It's camp, but still Harry.”

Lambert explained that the idea of Style’s outfit came together in London several months ago as a result of a meeting between himself, the singer and Michele.

“We met up earlier this year to share mood boards with the Gucci team,” Lambert explained.

“We had pages of printed references all on the table from Alessandro, myself and Harry, then we edited them down.”

Lambert added that the Gucci team designed approximately 20 designs following the meeting, which then led to him and Styles working through the fabrics, sketches and ideas in order for the design house to produce samples and organise fittings.

While many fashion fans expected Styles to opt for bold prints, as he has done in previous years on his music tours, Lambert said he believes he and the singer have “done that chapter” when it comes to fashion.

“We know it works. It's time to try something new and hopefully shock and inspire in a different way. I know the fans love his outfits, so hopefully they will love what’s to come. This is a more subtle form of camp which I love.”
