Met Gala 2019: Pink carpet fashion

The Met Gala, the most opulent fashion event of the year, provides A-listers with the opportunity to shamelessly pose up a storm in front of a sea of photographers.

Some celebrities go the extra mile, turning their red carpet appearance into a performance for the sartorial history books.

This year, one of the most memorable moments of the night came when Lady Gaga, a co-chair at the event, arrived on the pink carpet.

The crowds were transfixed as the A Star Is Born actor displayed not one, but four outfits, vogueing every step of the way.

Here are five of the best pink carpet performances from last night's Met Gala:

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell

As Lady Gaga made her highly anticipated entrance at the Met Gala, the crowds were astounded as the event co-chair unveiled her four Brandon Maxwell outfits, which she wore layered on top of each other.

Gaga began her arrival by posing in a voluminous, billowing fuchsia gown with a matching bow headpiece.

The gown was then opened to unveil a black, strapless dress underneath, which the star accessorised with a black umbrella.

The surprises continued, as it was revealed the Oscar winner was wearing a hot pink floor-length slip dress as a third layer to her outfit.

Finally, Gaga unveiled the fourth layer of her "camp" look – an embellished bra, matching underwear, fishnets and sky-high stiletto boots.

Zendaya in Tommy Hilfiger

Zendaya was the epitome of a Disney princess at the Met Gala, paying homage to Cinderella with her fairytale-inspired Tommy Hilfiger ballgown.

The actor's stylist, Law Roach, acted as her fairy godfather, waving a wand in front of her which emitted wisps of smoke.

As Zendaya ascended the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, the 22-year-old left a glass shoe on the staircase, just as the titular character does in the classic fairytale.

Several fans praised the star for the lengths she went to execute her regal performance.

"Most people just walk a red carpet, Zendaya performed a whole ass movie on hers,” one person tweeted.

Billy Porter in The Blonds

Billy Porter has become renowned for his dramatic entrances, raising the bar even higher at last night's event.

The performer wore a gold, custom "Sun God" ensemble designed by luxury brand The Blonds, which took inspiration from Ancient Egypt.

Porter was carried onto the pink carpet by six men, all of whom wore gold trousers, matching boots and ornate accessories.

Last night marked Porter's first appearance at the Met Gala.

“Coming from the theatre and being flamboyant and campy my whole life, it was a breathe of fresh air to have this focus on the genre,” Porter told Vogue. “It’s what I do.”

Ezra Miller in Burberry

Ezra Miller made a hypnotic appearance at the benefit gala, donning a pinstriped ensemble by Burberry and a surrealist makeup look.

The actor, whose eclectic fashion sense has been noted on several occasions over the past few years, had his face painted with several, realistic-looking eyes.

The Justice League star added to his mesmerising look by carrying a blank-face mask on a stick.

Janelle Monae in Christian Siriano

Miller wasn't the only one to take advantage of the eye motif at this year's Met Gala.

Janelle Monae also wore a striking ensemble for the event, designed with a large, mechanical blinking eye.

The singer's stylist, Alexandra Mandelkorn, told Hollywood Reporter that Monáe wanted to highlight the "playful, theatrical and artistic side of camp" with her Christian Siriano outfit.

The blinking eye on Monáe's left breast was created using Smooth Technology, and was programmed to blink at random intervals.

"So she really does have a mind of her own," Mandelkorn said of the sartorial feature.
