Candid Caller

THE bail-jumping man from Del Monte, Asil Nadir, has opened a can of worms with his recent flight to Cyprus. This week the Candid Caller went into hiding to ask: if you wanted to escape the long arm of the law, where would you go? And, to make your escape perfect, who or what would you take with you?

Mrs Heather Nadir-Jones of Bristol: 'This Nadir is, in fact, Algerian and if I was on the run, I'd go to my in-laws' house in Algeria. That would be stupid, I suppose, because I'd be traced immediately but that's still probably where I'd go. I wouldn't take anything but the family.'

Mrs Matilda Delmonte of Glasgow: 'I'd go to Borneo for no other reason than I love the name. I'm 70 and I'd want to take a toy-boy if I could get one - but don't tell my daughter.'

Mr Christopher Morgan of Malmesbury: 'I'd either run to somewhere in the Caribbean or some out-of-the-way place in the mid-west United States. I'd take my girlfriend.'

Mr Alan Mates of Accrington: 'I've only been out of the country once and then I went to Crete. I certainly wouldn't go back there. Depending, of course, on what sort of crime I'd committed, I'd take the money.'

Mrs Mary McAlpine of Haverhill: 'Obviously it's for hiding, not pleasure, so I'd head for somewhere quite remote like the Highlands of Scotland. I'd take my little car with me.'

Mrs Doreen Ryder of Telford: 'I'd go to Canada because I've got a brother there and I'd take my husband, Ray.'

Mrs Nora Fowler of Bo'Ness: 'I don't like the heat much but I'd get as far away as possible with as much money as I could lay my hands on. I'd take my son Daniel, who's four.'

Mrs Helen Heseltine of Liverpool: 'I'd go to California, where I've got family. I'd go on my own.'

Mrs Elizabeth Biggs of Southampton: 'My favourite holiday place is Benidorm so I'd love to hide there. I'd take my husband, Roy.'
