LAST year, R Griggs, the Northamptonshire shoe manufacturer, introduced high-heeled Doc Martens. Now it is taking another bold step with the launch of a range of men's clothing under the label, which will be in the shops from August.
The clothes are remarkably simple, inspired by traditional British clothing and workwear. Expect duffle coats, donkey jackets, leather waistcoats and 'McMarten' tartan overshirts. Branding is thankfully kept to a minimum; the yellow-black stitching used on DM footwear is a theme.
Whether Griggs can achieve the same success with clothing remains to be seen. But the news that Griggs is launching the new venture jointly with Red or Dead, a streetwise company with a strong track record, augurs well.
