Glamour magazine halts US monthly print edition after almost 80 years

The magazine's final print edition is coming out this month

Glamour is ending its US print edition to focus on its digital operation.

Condé Nast, the magazine's publisher, announced the move on Tuesday, as reported by The New York Times.

The publication's new editor-in-chief, Samantha Barry – a seasoned digital journalist who had never worked at a print magazine before taking over as the head of Glamour – said the pivot was "her plan, because it makes sense".

“It’s where the audiences are, and it’s where our growth is. That monthly schedule, for a Glamour audience, doesn’t make sense anymore," she added.

Glamour has retained a stable number of paying subscribers over the past three years, according to The New York Times, with 2.2 million readers paying for its print issue.

But Condé Nast had seemingly started to veer away from the format last year, when it announced Glamour would be publishing 11 issues a year instead of 12.

Barry was appointed as editor-in-chief in January this year, apparently confirming a change of strategy on the publisher's part.

Glamour's website will remain free for the time being.

The magazine could still release occasional print issues focusing on specific topics or events, such as its annual Women of the Year awards.

Glamour published its first issue in the US in 1939. For the first few years of its run, it was called Glamour of Hollywood – until the name was shortened to its current form.

Barry, a native of Cork, Ireland, addressed the move to digital on Twitter, saying she's "excited for what's ahead".

"Our storytelling at Glamour will be digital, social and video-led with special print moments to mark big issues and events," she wrote.

The last regular print issue of Glamour, its January edition, is set to be released on 27 November.

It's unclear how, if at all, international issues of the magazine will be affected.

Glamour UK went digital-first in October last year, cutting back its print editions to two a year.
