Is 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E' this year's most fashionable film?

The film's cast sport an impressive array of sixties clobber.

Forget the film, it's the fashion we're interested in. Every now and then a movie comes along that makes its way out of the cinemas and into our wardrobes.

'The Man From U.N.C.L.E' which is released today is a spy/action movie with the added bonus of a killer costume department.

Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki are the leading ladies in the film for sporting the very best of fashion from the swinging sixties.

Set in the 1960s, costume designer Joanna Johnston was tasked with kitting out the cast. But rather than rely on actual vintage pieces which may not have lived through the film's many stunts, Johnston had most of the outfits made.

"I'm absolutely crazy about a two-year period - 67 and 68 are magnificent in fashion" Johnston told Refinery 29.

"It's a pocket before it moves into the '70s vibe and after the early-'60s thing. I honed in on that because Guy [Richie] didn't really mind. He didn't want it to look academically anything, so he gave me a free reign. He wanted it to look just cool and sexy."

Johnston has worked on films including Lincoln for which she was nominated for an Oscar, Love Actually and War Horse. Her starting point of inspiration were sixties icons including Jean Shrimpton and Marisa Berenson as well as designers Emilio Pucci and Pierre Cardin.

The film is in cinemas today.
