The stunning gown wasn't the most practical choice, however

Kim Kardashian-West wowed attendees at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty on Sunday evening in a vintage Alexander McQueen “Oyster dress”.

Writing on Instagram Stories, the reality TV star admitted that, “I literally have to lay down in the car, like I cannot sit up, because my dress will rip or pop or something.

Despite the impracticality of the gown, the 39-year-old added that it was “worth it".

The elaborately decorated oyster-coloured gown was from the late designer’s archival collection and formed part of his 2003 Irere collection.

According to New York’s Met museum, where the dress was once part of its collection, the sand-coloured organza “recalls the mille-feuille ridging on the surface of a shell.

The description continues: “The hem of the skirt, like the wavy lip of a giant mollusk, further emphasises the seashell quality of the gown”, concluding that the stunning design is “a bruised pearl encased in a deconstructing oyster, the tumbled survivor of the violent action of waves.”

The trainee lawyer was accompanied by her husband, Kanye, who wore a navy leather blazer and black leather trousers, paired with a suede tan boots and a diamond chain.

Rooney Mara also opted for a McQueen dress at the star-studded event.

She accessorised the black lace gown with cut-outs with a red lip and a sleek bun.

While the Oscars is a more formal event, the Vanity Fair bash adopts a more laid-back approach meaning that while guests still pull out all the stops to look glitzy and glam, no colour, cut, or length is off-limits.

A number of stars including Beanie Feldstein and Timothee Chalamet stayed in the outfits they sported on the Oscars red carpet, but many made quick changes into entirely new looks.

Cynthia Erivo changed out of her white and silver Versace gown and stepped into a lilac satin ballgown that was covered in green sequins, while Charlize Theron swapped her elegant black Dior gown for a gold one-shoulder dress that featured six tiers of fringing.
