Shoppers queue outside Primark as England lockdown eases

With non-essential shops in England permitted to re-open from Monday, shoppers will once again be able to browse for items in person.

Fashion retailer Primark is famous for its affordable clothing and from today (12 April) bricks and mortar shops are able to re-open their doors for customers.

Extra measures such as one way systems and limited numbers in stores ensure the experience as safe as it can be for both customers and staff.

Primark has 153 shops within England and there has already been videos of customers queueing outside ahead of opening on Monday morning.

The company have said that most stores will open an hour earlier and close an hour later than their usual opening hours.

What time does Primark open today?

Most branches appear to be due to open at 7am - an hour earlier than their usual opening time.

Primark in Newcastle will reportedly keep its regular opening time of 8am, however, individual hours for each store can be found here.

Will they be staying open later?

Last week, Primark was one of the first stores to confirm it would be making full use of the extended opening hours for retail, provided by the government.

Longer shopping hours have been put in place to avoid congestion in non-essential stores and on transport, communities secretary Robert Jenrick confirmed on 26 March.

Shops will be permitted to stay open from 7am until 10pm from Monday to Saturday.

Jenrick said: “This will provide a much-needed boost for many businesses - protecting jobs, reducing pressure on public transport and supporting people and communities to continue to visit their high streets safely and shop locally.”

The extended opening hours will be in place during the first week and Primark bosses will make a decision thereafter about if these will continue.

In what has been a difficult period for non-essential shops as they have been forced to close over lockdown, the government has allowed for these shops to have extended opening hours.

These hours are not only to avoid crowding but to allow businesses the opportunity to make up for some of the custom they have lost out on.

Which branches are not reopening?

One of Primark’s new locations in Tamworth will not be opening.

The company had to apologise to customers for the confusion as it initially told customers on Twitter the branch would be opening.

It is unclear if there are other branches that will be remaining closed.

The Independent has contacted Primark for further information.
