It’s the mystery that Sex and the City fans have spent years puzzling over: why did Carrie Bradshaw wear a mismatched pair of Christian Louboutin heels in an episode of the beloved HBO series?

It was an unusual style choice even for the famously flamboyantly dressed protagonist, played by Sarah Jessica Parker.

Parker wore the strange ensemble in episode 13 of season three, which consisted of a white floral dress, paired with a metallic red high-heeled sandal on her right foot and a teal one on her left.

On Wednesday, an Instagram fan account for the show, named @EveryOutfitonSATC, posted a screenshot from the episode to address “The mystery of the mismatched Loubs”.

“Did Carrie buy these mismatched sandals straight off the rack?” the caption read. “Or did she purchase two separate pairs and mix them together herself? Are they a metaphor for her inability to choose between Aidan and Big? Unfortunately, we have no answers.”

The fan account goes on to describe the scene as one of Bradshaw’s “most compelling footwear moments on the series”.

Much to everyone’s delight, Parker herself commented on the post, providing some long-awaited intel into why she intentionally wore the mismatched shoes.

“Here is the official answer and I'm sure approved by the great and legendary @patriciafield,” the actor wrote, tagging the programme’s revered costume designer.

“We had two pairs of what I believe are @louboutinworld scrappy sandals. Pat and I chose to do one of each. Perhaps because both were so delicious in colour and seemed in harmony with the dress but also because we simply loved doing one of each. Sending my best. And hope this is a satisfactory answer. Xxx [sic]”.

Now fans know the move was intentional, expect to see hordes of people following in Bradshaw’s footsteps and wearing mismatched shoes with Carrie-approved pride this summer.
