Trendwatch: Spray-on tattoos conquer the runways

The big craze of getting a real tattoo seems to be over (with many already paying dearly to have them removed), but maybe it's just the durability of it and not the look itself that designers have had enough of.

When Rodarte sprayed their models with tribal tattoos in New York this fashion week season, it could have just been another conceptual gimmick by the avant-garde designers (and they also went well with another trend: the ethnic chic).

But now, in Paris, Jean Paul Gaultier made his streetwear- and hip hop-inspired looks complete by spraying models' names onto their bodies and faces (Sasha Pivovarova, Iris Strubegger). And a designer as established as Karl Lagerfeld used rub-on tattoos for the Chanel show where models were wearing illusions of chain bracelets.
