Chicken wraps recalled from Co-op, Aldi and Morrisons over fears they contain metal
The products have been removed from supermarket shelves
Chicken wraps have been removed from sale at Co-op, Aldi and Morrisons over fears they may contain metal splinters.
The wraps, produced by Greencore, passed safety screening checks, however the precautionary measure has been taken due to concerns that there may be metal contaminants in the mayonnaise.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned the public not to consume the wraps and has recalled them from supermarket shelves.
A spokesperson for Greencore told The Independent: “Greencore can confirm that a small number of products that originated from its Manton Wood facility have been recalled from three of its customers.
“This is due to a contamination issue that the company identified in one of its raw materials. Having launched an immediate investigation, Greencore was able to quickly establish that the contamination took place at the site of one of its suppliers.
“Greencore operates to the very highest standards of food safety and quality, and is working closely with the supplier concerned. No other Greencore sites or products are affected.”
But the FSA says there’s a risk people could be injured by any metal fragments in the wraps.
“This product poses a safety risk to people,” a spokesperson said. “If you have bought any of these products, do not eat them. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.”
The stores in question are now displaying notices explaining why the products are being recalled and what customers should do if they bought one.
“No other Greencore, Aldi, Co-op or Morrisons products are known to be affected,” the FSA added.
The affected products are chicken and bacon caesar wraps as well as Morrisons’ chicken and bacon triple caesar wrap.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “Our supplier is recalling this product as a precaution because a small number of packs may contain metal. Customers should not consume the product and should return it to their nearest store where they will receive a full refund.”
And a spokesperson for Co-op explained that the wraps in question were removed from stores before being sold: “We have already initiated a withdrawal due to the potential for metal contaminants in the mayonnaise used in the wrap, after being informed of the issue by Greencore.
“This was a precautionary measure as Greencore’s metal detector didn’t detect any issues with our product. The product had only been delivered to our stores when the withdrawal notice was activated so the affected product was removed by our store colleagues before it was sold.”
The Independent has contacted Morrisons for comment and is awaiting a response.
