Confectionery manufacturer Mars Wrigley has apologised for a shortage of chocolate caused by a factory “breakdown”.

On Tuesday 3 March, the food company released a statement on Twitter outlining why customers may have noticed certain chocolate items lacking in availability in stores.

The firm, which owns brands including Maltesers, Bounty and Celebrations, issued an apology on the social media platform.

“You may have noticed that some of our chocolates aren’t as widely available in stores as they usually are. It goes without saying, we’re really sorry!” the company stated.

“It’s also important to us that you know why. We’ve had a mechanical breakdown at our factory in Slough which means that we aren’t able to make as many treats as we would like.”

Mars UK explained that “for the time being”, consumers may not be able to find products including Maltesers, Revels and some Galaxy treats including Minstrels, Counters, Galaxy Milk and Ripple in stores.

“No other treats are affected,” the firm added.

“We know it’s not ideal and we hate to disappoint, but please be assured that our engineers in the factory are working around the clock to ensure that we are back up and running to full capacity as soon as possible.

“Thank you for bearing with us.”

Mars Wrigley confirmed with The Independent that the availability of its Easter products is unaffected for the most part.

Last year, Mars-owned brand Galaxy launched its first range of vegan chocolate bars.

The chocolate bars come in three varieties: caramelised hazelnut, smooth orange and caramel and sea salt.

Kerry Cavanaugh, marketing director at Galaxy manufacturer Mars Wrigley UK, said the company was “so excited” to introduce the Galaxy vegan range using a recipe that “doesn’t compromise on the brand’s signature smooth and creamy characteristics”.

“Wherever you look you can’t avoid the vegan buzz in the UK and with the launch of Galaxy Vegan we’re thrilled to be offering vegans, flexitarians and lovers of sweet treats even more ways to choose pleasure with a brand they love,” he stated.

Mars Wrigley collaborated with The Vegan Society on the launch of the chocolate bar range and its logo design.
