White

1999 Kumala Chardonnay, £4.29, Sainbsury's

There's plenty to enjoy in this attractively packaged Chardonnay from the Cape. Its clean-cut fruitiness, with undertones of peach and pear, is pierced by a delightfully crisp acidity which nicely balances the flavours and adds a degree of mouthwatering freshness.

Red

1997 McLaren Vale Shiraz, £6.99, Tesco

This is textbook South Australian shiraz from Maglieri Wines in the rolling southern vales of Willunga and McLaren Flat. A juicy, voluptuously ripe and deceptively powerful red, made by John Loxton, showing red-berry flavours etched with exotic notes of spice and mint.
