Saturday: 2002 Sainsbury's Classic Selection Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine sur lie, Domaine Jean Douillard, £4.99, Sainsbury's
This Atlantic coast dry white from the Pays Nantais is just what a good, summery muscadet sur lie should be. After sitting "in tank" on the grape lees, it has gathered a cleansing spritz with the appetising flavour of juicy fresh pears and a refreshingly tangy, bone-dry aftertaste. The ideal seafood white.
Sunday: 2001 Vinsobres Les Cornuds, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Perrin, £6.49, Tesco
Tesco seems to be on a roll with the classy new 2001 southern Rhônes. This fine village Rhône from the Perrins exudes the classic peppery characters of the region and the rich and spicy concentration of old vine fruitiness. Made in a juicy, Sunday roast or barbecue-friendly style, it's a cracker.
Any day: 2001 Val dei Molini Garganega, £3.99, Morrisons
Garganega, the low-profile soave grape, seems to spend most of its life cruising in neutral, but in the case of this soave lookalike, Kiwi winemaker Matt Thomson has managed to inject an almost indecent amount of fresh life, bounce and zippy flavour into the style. Chill it down and drink with salads, pizza or fish and chips. AR
