This crisp and juicy Gascon blend of colombard and ugni blanc from the go-ahead Plaimont Co-operative has a refreshingly grassy, sauvignon-like snap. Who says posh wine merchants can't do great value?
Under a tenner: 2003 Yering Frog Pinot Noir, £6.99, or buy two for £5.99 each (until 2 May), Majestic Wine Warehouses
An offspin from Yering Station in Victoria's pinot noir capital, the Yarra Valley, this is a juicy, soft, cherryish pinot noir. It's worth snapping up a few bottles of this as your house red.
Splash out: 2002 Emotion de Terroirs, Vincent Girardin, £12.49, Oddbins
Never mind the slightly pretentious name, this pinot noir is an unpretentious, modern red burgundy whose bright plum and loganberry fruit richness is enhanced by a lightly spiced touch of oak and balancing fresh acidity.
