This uncomplicated, fresh vintage blend from the Cape shows fresh and juicy pear-like fruitiness. An affordable everyday dry white, especially with the special offer.
Under a tenner: 2002 Altos de Luzón, Jumilla, £9.99, Majestic
Open and decant this Spanish red for a couple of hours before the meal. Smoky oak adds a nicely spicy, softening dimension to the ripe plum and damson flavours in this old vine blend of Jumilla's mourvèdre with tempranillo and cabernet sauvignon.
Splash out: 2002 Domaine Saumaize-Michelin, Les Vieilles Vignes, St Véran, £10.99, Raeburn Fine Wines, Edinburgh
A great little white burgundy, this has an enticingly smoky bouquet with the qualities of a superior Pouilly Fuissé; and a nutty aftertaste streaked with traces of honeyed ripeness.
