The exceptional 2002 of this dry riesling from Western Australia, with an Opal Fruits-like freshness, is a steal at Tesco's Spring Wine Festival which kicked off on Wednesday.

Under a tenner: 2002 Heartland Limestone Coast Shiraz, £7.99, Oddbins

You'd be pushed to find a better syrah / shiraz at this price. After a blip in the previous vintage, this superbly aromatic South Australia shiraz, with its sweet liquorice and tobacco-spice aromas, is immensely seductive. A casserole special.

Splash out: 2002 Wither Hills Pinot Noir, £13.99-£15, Booths, Waitrose, Oddbins

What a difference a vintage makes! This once-thick New Zealand red Burgundy wannabe has become an elegantly perfumed red with a seductive loganberry-like fruitiness and the deftest touch of spicy oak. Maybe it's the screwcap.
