Even lesser châteaus shone wondrously in the excellent year of 2009 and this is no exception. From vines grown close to Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe, velvety, blackcurrant flavours, a hint of spice and elegant tannins characterise this fabulous, incredibly well-priced claret. A wonderfully well-crafted Spanish white, made with two different harvests from the same vineyard, picked early and late, which achieves the desired balance between fresh, vibrant apple and stone-fruit flavours and an underlying herbal complexity. Chemins de Gascogne 2014

From the remarkable Plaimont co-operative in south-west France, which blends big, efficient production with a large range of really individual wines, this is a lovely blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard, the latter adding a little creaminess to the former's sparky citrus and grapefruit.
