Sunday lunch

Villa Dei Ladri 2013

From the Langhe in north-west Italy, a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbara grapes: subtle and given deceptive complexity by some oak ageing. Medium-bodied, woody, smoky notes underpin the cherry fruit flavours, a bit like a rustic Burgundy. Lovely with lighter meat dishes, such as roast pork or chicken. £13.99, Laithwaites

Midweek meal

Alamos Malbec Catena 2013

The quality of most mid-priced Argentine Malbec from Mendoza is extremely high and this is no exception: juicy, with sweet, ripe, dark fresh and dried fruit, plenty of structure and a good, savoury finish. Drink with a grilled rare duck breast or steak. £9.99, Majestic (as part of an order of six mixed bottles)

Bargain basement

Château de La Gravelle Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2013

Gorgeously zingy and zesty, full of flavours of green apples and lemons, this refreshing and invigorating screw-topped Loire white is a reminder that, with luck, spring is not far away. Drink as an aperitif or with salads and simple seafood dishes. £8, Marks & Spencer
