McDonald’s Japan launches chocolate and hazelnut-filled pie

McDonald’s Japan has launched a chocolate and hazelnut-filled pie that will have Nutella fans all over the world salivating.

The “Premium Sankaku [Triangle] Choco Pie” is made in a triangular shape with a flaky pastry and gooey insides.

What’s more, the rich chocolatey cream inside contains hazelnut paste and small pieces of nuts.

Launching yesterday across McDonald’s branches in Japan, the triangular chocolatey is priced at JP¥150, which equates to around £1.

A number of customers have already spread the word about the pie on social media, uploading photos and also commenting on the differences between the new offering and the original McDonald’s triangular pie which costs JP¥120 (77p).

One woman wrote a blog post comparing the two, coming to the conclusion that the premium chocolate and hazelnut pie does in fact have a premium taste.

This isn’t the only news about McDonald’s to hit the headlines in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, McDonald’s announced their aims to achieve fully sustainable packaging by 2025, following a number of complaints to various retailers about their use of plastic packaging.

The fast food chain also bowed down to pressure to increase the salaries of their employees after staff members in the UK went on strike to protest their low pay.

Nestlé has also made its mark on the chocolate industry in Japan, becoming the first company to commercialise naturally pink chocolate at the Japanese KitKat Chocolatory.

The “Sublime Ruby” KitKat was developed by chef Yasumasa Takagi by using natural “ruby” chocolate produced by Barry Callebaut.

Now the only question we have is when is the ruby KitKat and the chocolate and hazelnut McDonald’s pie going to arrive in the UK?
