McDonald’s US to remove salads, bagels and other menu items for foreseeable future

McDonald’s CEO says it is ‘unlikely’ restaurant will revert back to menu it offered before pandemic

McDonald’s plans on keeping several items off its menu in the US for the foreseeable future, the firm has announced.

During the coronavirus pandemic, McDonald’s has had to offer customers a limited menu, as the company has had to employ fewer staff members in order to better practise social distancing.

In the UK, the limited menu still features several staple dishes, including the Big Mac, McChicken Sandwich, Chicken McNuggets and Maltesers McFlurry.

Across the pond, it has been reported that customers shouldn’t expect various food items to return to the menu any time soon.

According to the Wall Street Journal, while seven items will return to the menu throughout July, others will be kept off.

Returning dishes include vanilla cones, chocolate chip cookies and different types of Quarter Pounder burger.

However, other offerings, including salads, bagels and yoghurt parfaits, are not scheduled to be made available to customers again as of yet.

“In a statement, McDonald’s USA said that the franchise will continue to “evolve” its menu to “meet the needs” of its customers.

“Now we’re reintroducing some of our iconic offerings while keeping our menu streamline – focusing on expert preparation, great service, and as always, quality ingredients,” the firm stated.

“With customers at the centre of everything we do, we’ll continue listening to them and evolving our menu to meet their needs.”

On Tuesday, Chris Kempczinkski, CEO of McDonald’s, told investors that while some items will be added back to the menu, it is “unlikely” that the fast food restaurant will revert back to the menu it offered before the pandemic, CNBC reported.

Last month, McDonald’s announced that by Thursday 4 June, more than 1,000 of its chains across the UK and Ireland would be opened either for drive-through or delivery.

“This means every Drive Thru in the UK and Ireland will reopen between Tuesday and Thursday next week and we will start to expand the availability of McDelivery too,” a spokesperson for the company said.

McDonald’s has outlined the safeguarding measures members of staff will be taking, including wearing face coverings and gloves.

Perspex screens have also been put up in restaurants and social distancing measures will be observed during business.
