Eid-ul-Fitr – also known as ‘Sweet Eid’ – is aptly named because of the sheer amount of sweet dishes and treats shared among the world’s 1.57 billion Muslims as they officially break away from the fast-days they observed throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Food can vary from the traditional – dates, vermicelli in sweet milk, honey-based pastries and cakes – to the more contemporary South-Asian sweets such as gulab jamun (heavy cake balls soaked in syrup) with ice-cream, mango or pistachio kulfi (frozen dessert) and strawberry or chocolate-favoured barfi (dense coconut confectionery).
