Original cupcake trendsetter to open in Bloomingdale's

The Manhattan bakery widely credited for kicking off the worldwide cupcake trend has partnered with another iconic New York destination in a collaboration that promises to hit visitors' sweet spot.

Magnolia Bakery has announced that it will open an outlet at Bloomingdale's flagship store in New York this summer where they'll sell their signature heavily frosted, pastel-colored cupcakes.

The desserts have made cameo, scene-stealing appearances on TV shows like Sex and the City, in which Carrie and Miranda sit outside the bakery and take huge bites out of pink-frosted cupcakes while talking about their love lives.

In the movie 2005 Prime starring Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, the bakery also makes repeat appearances as the supplier of baked goods for one of the characters who throws pies at his ex-girlfriends.

Its reputation and film cameos have made Magnolia bakeries tourist destinations in New York, attracting snaking lines around the block.

The bakery will be housed street level via Bloomingdale's mid-block entrance on Third Avenue, between 59th and 60th Streets, and serve muffins, cakes, pies, cookies, cheesecakes, puddings and cupcakes.

The new location will join four other New York City locations, as well as stores in Los Angeles at Bloomingdale's in Dubai.

The company's announcement comes on the heels of a messy legal food fight, one that New York City has dubbed the 'cupcake wars,' involving allegations of trademark infringement and unfair competition between the current owners, the bakery co-founder, and a Greek socialite who opened a cupcake bakery in Athens, Greece bearing a strikingly similar likeness to Magnolia.

One of the parties in the circle of lawsuits, original co-founder Jennifer Appel, parted ways with Magnolia in 1999 and opened rival bakery Buttercup Bake Shop in midtown Manhattan.
