Tate Gallery Restaurant Tate Britain, Millbank, London SW1, tel: 020 7887 8877 Hailed as a national treasure by the Zagat guide, the Tate's renowned, classic wine list picks up one award after another. What is remarkable is not the abundance of big names on the list, but the dearth of big-name prices. The food is Modern British, and it's not as difficult to find something to eat as the Rex Whistler mural entitled The Expedition in Search of Rare Meats might suggest.

John Burton-Race The Landmark, 222 Marylebone Road, London NW1, tel: 020 7723 7800 In this lavishly appointed, light-filled dining-hall, John Burton-Race has carried on from where he left off at L'Ortolan in Berkshire, with his finely judged, highly detailed cooking. Prices are as haute as the cuisine, and there are 1,500 bottles on the list that will go very nicely with your carpaccio of marinated salmon with caviar cream or whole roast chicken with parsley and truffles.

Adlard's 79 Upper Giles Street, Norwich, tel: 01603 633 522 David Adlard's popular establishment may be Norwich's only Michelin-starred restaurant, but there is nothing stuffy about the place. Instead it's friendly and comfortable, serving up well-crafted French-based food that runs from salmon ballottine with crème chantilly to roast turbot with crushed potatoes. There is no sommelier, but the list is user-friendly, diverse and inviting, with 30 half-bottles and good wine and food pairing suggestions.

Petrus, 33 St James's Street, London SW1, tel: 020 7930 4272. Open Mon-Fri 12.30-2.30pm and Mon-Sat 6.45-11pm. Set dinner, £55, lunch, £26, plus wine and service
