Birds Eye launches vegan chicken dippers as part of new Green Cuisine range

Birds Eye has launched a vegan-friendly version of its iconic chicken dippers.

For a long time, plant-based eaters have not had the pleasure of enjoying the crispy-coated dinner time staple, but that is all about to change.

As part of its new Green Cuisine range, Birds eye has launched chicken-free dippers, which are made from a meat substitute that is rich in pea protein, low in saturated fat and is a source of fibre.

The range also includes chicken-free nuggets and chicken-free southern fried strips, so customers can now enjoy meat-free versions of their favourite foods.

According to Birds Eye’s senior brand manager, Anne-Marie Gayer, the decision to add new products to the vegan range was inspired partly by the increasing number of Brits going meat-free or adopting a plant-based diet during lockdown.

“We know families have enjoyed our great tasting chicken product range for generations, and our chicken dippers in particular are a firm favourite at dinner tables across the nation,” she said.

“But with more families than ever now cutting down on meat, we don’t want anyone to miss out on the great taste. 

"We have spent a long time perfecting a vegan recipe that offers the same delicious taste and texture of our iconic chicken pieces, and are confident that our new Green Cuisine chicken-free range does just that – all powered by plants.”

In July, it was announced that trademarks registered for vegan food and drink products had soared in the UK during lockdown, which began in March.

According to research compiled by trademark law firm EMW, the number of trademarks for plant-based products had more than doubled, reaching a record high, with 107 successfully granted for products such as vegan ice cream and meat-free burgers.

A similar study conducted by The Vegan Society found that one in five (20 per cent) of Britons are reducing their meat intake while 15 per cent have chosen to reduce their dairy and/or egg intake.

Matt Turner, spokesperson for The Vegan Society, said: “After the unprecedented success of Veganuary and the swathes of new vegan products hitting the shelves in recent months, it’s no surprise that many consumers have made the switch to plant-based alternatives during the Covid-19 pandemic, whether that be for convenience, cost, or concern for their own wellbeing, the environment and the rights of animals.”

The new Birds Eye’s Green Cuisine Chicken range is available for £2.50 in Morrisons, Asda, and Sainsbury’s, with Tesco set to stock the products from the 26 October.
