Facebook down: Social network back up after outage lasting at least 30 minutes

Facebook users are once again able to access the world's second most popular website, after it experienced a lengthy outage across desktop and mobile platforms.

Those who tried to access the website on desktop computers instead saw what appeared to be a default notice reading: "Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."

Mobile users, meanwhile, were unable to refresh their apps, with iPhone users being told there was a "network error."

Facebook's platform status website, which is used for developers, was also down. However, Down Detector, a website which tracks outages, reported a huge spike in Facebook problems from 8pm (GMT +1).

People were unable to use Facebook, which is often used to organise events, for at least 30minutes before it was back up. However, others were still having difficulties using the service.

As Facebook gradually recovered, its developer's page also reappeared. At around 9:30pm (GMT +1) the website reported that the issues were ongoing but that the current status was “fix ready”.

“A Facebook-wide issue is causing the Facebook Graph API to be temporarily unavailable. We're working with our core infrastructure teams to identify the issue and will update you when we have more information,” the website explained.

Facebook users quickly took to rival social networks, including Twitter, to flag up the stoppage.

It remains unclear why the website was not working for some of its 1 billion users.

Facebook, which prides itself on not going down, experienced a stoppage on the evening of Thursday 24 September. Facebook later explained than a internal issues had caused the outage, rather than an attack.
