'Mortal Kombat' viral video was an accident, says director

Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, a nine-minute short that became a YouTube hit, wasn't supposed to go public back in June 2010, Kevin Tancharoen told video game news site Gamasutra. "Thank God people liked it, because it could have gone really bad."

Kevin wanted Warner Bros to give him the go-ahead for a full-length feature, and realized that he couldn't just email over the 2GB pilot. "My friend said I could create a private page on YouTube and send it to him to review. It turns out it wasn't that private."

For now, the young director's shooting a web series due out spring 2011, coinciding with the new Mortal Kombat game's April release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but he's not forgotten the big screen dream.

That sort of publicity could help Mortal Kombat stand up to Marvel vs Capcom 3, out in mid-February for the same game consoles.

"I would love to tell the stories that lead the character up to a certain point [in the series], then have them merge together in a big 3D movie."
