Huawei Mate 10: Price, release date and everything else you need to know

It has an AI processor to help it learn from your usage habits

Huawei has just unveiled three new high-end smartphones: the Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10.

The handsets are designed to go head-to-head with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Note 8, the iPhone 8 and Google Pixel 2.

They’ll hit the market in two waves, and will be available for between €699 and a staggering €1,395.

The three phones, all of which run Android Oreo, are largely the same, with the most obvious difference coming in the screen size department.

The Huawei Mate 10 has a 5.9-inch, 2,560 x 1,440 display, while the Pro and Porsche Design models instead using a slightly larger but less sharp 6-inch, 2,160 x 1,080 display.

The smaller handset also packs less of a punch, featuring 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The Pro model is IP67 water- and dust-resistant and has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the Porsche Design model features 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

All three are powered by the Kirin 970 chip, which Huawei has dubbed an “AI processor”. According to the company, the chip helps the phone work faster “for AI-related tasks”.

The phone uses it to recognise a range of objects through the camera, such as animals and food, and learn your usage habits.

One of the Mate 10’s other headline features is the Leica dual-camera setup on the back, which combines a 20-megapixel monochrome lens with a 12-megapixel colour sensor.

The system is designed to let you easily play with effects and adjust the level of bokeh in pictures, making the subject stand out.

Huawei has been offering this functionality for some time, and other manufacturers, including Apple and Google, now do something similar with their flagship phones.

On the front of the Mate 10 is an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

All three models are also powered by a 4,000mAh battery, which looks very generous on paper. They can be recharged quickly via the USB-C port too, because of the inclusion of Huawei’s SuperCharge technology.

Something that’s likely to divide opinion, however, is the phone’s design. The Mate 10 has a highly distinctive rear, thanks to an unusual reflective band that has been designed to attract attention to the camera.

It’s certainly very noticeable, but we don’t think it’s the most aesthetically-pleasing design move.

All three handsets have a glass body, but will be available in a different range of colours.

The Mate 10, which will come out in “late” October and cost €699 (£620), will be available in Mocha Brown, Black, Champagne Gold and Pink Gold colour schemes.

The Mate 10 Pro, meanwhile, will cost €799 (£710) when it hits the market in mid-November. It will be available in Midnight Blue, Titanium Grey, Mocha Brown and Pink Gold colour options.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10, meanwhile, will cost an astonishing €1,395 (£1,240) when it comes out next month, and will only be available in Diamond Black.
