Two of YouTube's biggest stars in the world have broken up, they have announced.

The vloggers known as Jacksepticeye and Wiishu – who regularly made videos together and often documented their relationship – said they had not been together for the last couple of months.

They asked for privacy as they deal with the breakup, which had been previously addressed in front of their fans.

Jacksepticeye's real name is Sean McLoughlin and he is one of the platform's biggest stars, with more than 20 million followers. Wiishu's real name is Signe Hansen and the two had lived together in Brighton.

"It’s hard for me to say this but a couple of months ago Signe and I went our separate ways," he posted on Twitter. "This was not an easy decision to make.

"Sometimes people change and life moves on in different directions. We would really appreciate respect and privacy on this topic moving forward and not gossip or spread rumours. Thank you!"

Hansen posted a longer update in which she asked fans not to speculate on the reasons the two had broken up.

"I’m afraid I’m going to have to be the bearer of bad news," she wrote in a long update. "It might not be as much of a shock at this point in time but as it is, Sean and I are no longer together.

"It has taken me a long time to address this matter and let you guys know because as most of you know, it hurts a lot to leave someone you love and I was in a lot of emotional pain.

"I’ve seen a lot of rumours speculating about what happened as well and I apologise for that. ‘Some people have even prematurely put the blame on me and used me as a scapegoat, which is unfair.

"I’ve been very supportive of Sean as well as the decision to break it off."

She committed to continuing to make videos – as McLoughlin has also done since the breakup – but recognised that future posts might be different.

"Whatever the aftermath of this might be, I will continue doing my own thing and trying my very best to create content for you guys even if it’s going to have to be in different surroundings."
