Gordon Ramsay has defended his appearance in a TV advert for South Korean lager Cass after social media users called it ‘the worst beer in the world.’
The Michelin-starred chef appeared in the TV advert after being made an ambassador earlier this year where he can be seen praising the drink as a “great beer” and “bloody fresh.”
As he enjoys a range of South Korean dishes he says, “Sweet, spicy, super hot, very rare that three different types can blend with a fresh beer."
However, the chef’s appearance has been widely mocked online where social media users have questioned the 51-year-old’s sincerity in the ad.
This is because the mass-market beer, which is brewed with a reduced amount of malt, has been condemned by many as “the world’s worst beer” while others call it “bloody horrible.”
Taking to Twitter, one person wrote, “I'm losing my mind over this recent Korean ad Gordon Ramsay did for Cass which is maybe the worst beer in the world.”
Another added, “Internet, I will provide 20,000 for conclusive proof that Gordon Ramsay was a Cass drinker before he started endorsing it.”
Despite the backlash, Ramsay has been quick to jump to the drinks defence hailing it as “the beer for the people.”
“I‘m far from embarrassed,” he said at a press conference in Seoul, according to the Korea Herald.
“I have fallen in love with Korean food, and it doesn’t need to have an oversophisticated, slightly unique beer that costs a fortune.
“The authenticity of Korean food with the No. 1 beer for me felt like a perfect match. It‘s by far the freshest, coolest ... and also in these difficult times, with the economy in recession, it is a beer that can easily be bought and have some fun with. It’s not pretentious.”
Speaking to Korea Joongang Daily, the TV chef added, “I am not an elite myself. I had a difficult upbringing having to move 15 times during my childhood.
”I picked Cass because it is an easy drink that you can enjoy with your friends.“
